Mostar to Drvenik - by bike

We had a fairly long day planned for our first day riding, but due to a mix up about what time we wanted breakfast we didn't get away till about 9.30.
Before we left Tracey thanked me for being a good husband, sure that she was going to be run over by a bus or truck in one of the dark tunnels on the highway.
We could see on Open Street Maps that there was a road all the way along the Neretva River on the other side from the main road. We suspected that it was not all sealed, a suspicion confirmed at breakfast by a helpful local. We had an easy exit from Mostar and managed to stay off the highway for 20km, including about 3 or 4 km of rough unsealed track.
We stopped for coffee at a roadside restaurant that had NO CAKE.
The highway wasn't too bad, and as soon as we crossed the border (we rode right up to the front of the long queue of cars and were waved through without showing more than the outside cover of our passports) we crossed the river again and had a good long run on quiet roads.
After Ploce, where we had lunch, riding up the coastal road was very scenic, and there was a very long stretch of brand new hotmix (the stuff that all roads are paved with in cyclists' heaven). The road was wide enough that the moderate amount of traffic was not a problem.
We arrived at our very nice hotel at about 3.30 feeling pretty weary but pleased with ourselves, and happy that the plan for the day had worked well.
Trace had a snooze while Pat went for a wander and rehydrated with Coke and Karlovacko beer. At the little bar right on the beach, 250ml of Coke and 500ml of beer cost the same - 15 kuna ($2.50).
We had the three course dinner deal at the hotel, sharing the dining room with a large group of Germans. The maitre d' bore a striking resemblance to Basil Faulty, did not smile once, and spoke to us only in German. The food and the other staff were very nice, and Basil was amusing.
In the morning we catch the ferry to Hvar island.
