Momjan to Matavun (Skocjan Caves)

As a result of Michael's local knowledge, we changed our planned route. Apparently, if we had ridden across the border where we had intended to, we would probably have been arrested.
So we set off in light rain, which became torrential within a few kilometres. By the time we had reached the border crossing, riding on the road had become too dangerous. Fortunately, Michael's suggested route followed the Parenzana, which is all sealed in Slovenia. It passes through some lovely areas as well as a number of impressive bike tunnels - the longest of which was over 500mt. We followed the bicycle path all the way to Koper, where we had a pizza lunch and tried repeatedly to contact our pensione for the evening. We knew lodgings were scarce in the area & couldn't leave Koper until we were assured of somewhere to stay. Eventually we tracked down the elusive Koper tourist bureau & they managed to get through & confirm our accommodation. By then we had missed the afternoon train & despite the continuing rain, we decided to ride.
After 40 km & some big long climbs, we arrived almost hypothermic at 6.30. Luckily our hosts rallied around with heaters and general assistance & we were soon thawed (long hot showers) & seated beside a lovely big heater for a three course dinner (beefsteak with truffles, mixed grill, chocolate mouse, v good apple strudel & local teran red wine). I think we are obsessed with food. We got chatting with Knut, the Norwegian hiker & the three girls from Seattle, two of whom were originally from China and everyone stayed on in the dining room till quite late.
